Why random packs can still be risky

Opening packs is a "variable reward" mechanic: you do not know what you will get, and rare results feel great. That is the same psychological loop used by slot machines and paid loot boxes. Even without money, it can lead to compulsive play, chasing a specific card, loss of sleep, neglected school, work or relationships, and frustration or anger after bad pulls. Some research also suggests that loot-box style mechanics can normalise gambling behaviour for younger players who may later encounter real-money gambling.

Warning signs to watch for

• Playing far longer than you intended, or feeling unable to stop.
• Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you cannot open packs.
• Chasing one specific card and feeling you are "due" a good pull. You are not — every pack is independent.
